2021 Pushing Outdoor Living Commercial Appeal

It’s no secret that 2020 was a tough time with COVID-19. We’ve all had to shelter in place. We’ve avoided indoor dining and gatherings and limited our contact with family, friends, and business associates. It’s been rough to say the least.

These changes have heavily impacted our lives and brought on adjustments in the outdoor living industry. Clients are asking for more commercial outdoor applications. And in response, demands to our industry are changing. These needs will undoubtedly affect ordering in 2021 and carry over into 2022.

Why you may ask?

1. People just won’t totally feel safe inside.

While I want to be optimistic about vaccine distribution, it likely won’t be available to everyone at once. Scientists are telling us that things will be closer to normal in May so it sounds to me like Summer will be outdoors. We’ve also gotten used to social distancing so it will feel a bit odd for us to all of a sudden huddle together.

2. Everyone’s looking forward to getting outside.

Kids haven’t run. We can’t wait to see our friends and family. I for one am looking forward to my next trade show. With that being said, after spending over 365 days inside, outdoor commercial space will be in high demand. Let’s face it, confinement will be SO 2020.

3. There really will be a new normal.

Humans are very adaptive, we will conform to the new normal. And listen, if businesses have already invested their dollars in outdoor structures, why put them to waste. We’ll lean into them and see more outdoor concerts, comedy shows, weddings, and family gatherings.

4. Commercial structures constructed during the rise of COVID-19 weren’t built to last.

Listen, I thought this was going to be a two week, MAYBE two month problem. No one knew we would be in month nine! Outdoor structures were haphazardly put up to meet the increased outdoor demands. Now businesses are looking for quality outdoor living structures. These take the form of cabana style structures with furniture and shading or large umbrellas— regardless of what they look like, it is important to have the commercial grade for longevity and better overall appeal.

For example an accomplished architect client of mine was tapped by a prominent musical university that needed to build an outdoor stage for concerts and gatherings. They needed quality shading and seating options. They also needed to be safe for all weather so that students weren’t at risk from an unidentified flying parasol. That meant thinking through tables, chairs, and umbrellas with in-ground mounds to keep it all stable and safe.

I know we will see these needs continue into 2021 and beyond.

Bring on 2021 we are ready to meet the challenge!
