How to Select Outdoor Commercial Grade Furniture from an Expert

In a time when more people need to be outside because of the COVID-19 pandemic, projects require more furniture for commercial spaces. This coupled with the fact that fast fashion, single use plastic, and one season furniture is something many are moving away from in a green world, means shoppers want furniture that lasts.

To help landscape design architects, hospitality procurement teams, and even the person who wants backyard furniture that lasts, I put together the top 5 tips for shopping commercial:

1. Select a quality frame by being in the know about materials and finishes.

Always make sure the frames are well fabricated and reinforced for commercial and contract application. You’ll want them finished to the specs required for each project. Outdoor furniture needs to be well welded and you should look for frames with heavy powder coating for durability and high performance.

2. Be ready to mix, match, and offer transitional styles.

In the commercial space hotels and country clubs can come with a coupling of old world and new world. You might come across a traditional main building with a modern pool outdoor so you’ll need the designs to move from traditional to transitional or offer modern-contemporary options. Make sure you have a plethora of style options so your clients are satisfied.

3. Make sure fabrics are comfortable and high quality.

In commercial spaces, you need to be able to please everyone. This means comfort comes to the forefront of many design selections. When selecting fabric, go with a material made of solution dyed acrylic versus polyester. Your clients will appreciate you sourcing cushions with waterfall edge, welting, boxing, and back pillows for comfort and long wear. Make sure to take note of the table heights, counter heights, bar/pub heights, and properly fitted banquettes

4. Share your lead time.

Keep lead time in mind. When purchasing commercial grade products, lead time can vary and might be longer than you expect. Make sure to check with your manufacturers sales representative to ensure your projects fall in line with all soft and grand opening criteria. They’ll know when there are delays with shipping or what can be ready quickly.

5. Be upfront about your budget, there are lots of options.
